Dr. Samuel J. Stegman is a clinical professor of dermatology at the University of California. His career is linked with tireless advocacy for the specialties of dermatology.

In 1987 Dr. Stegman's hallmark work on sleep wrinkles proved that the muscular region of the face known as the "underlying superficial muscular aponeurotic system" (SMAS) was damaged by pillow contact. He found a correlation between the location of the underlying SMAS and sleep lines.
